Rat Bait Toxicity in Dogs

With rat bait being laid as the weather gets colder, it’s important to know the dangers it poses to dogs. Even small amounts can be toxic and lead to serious health problems.

Signs of poisoning include:

  • Lethargy/ weakness
  • Pale gums (see picture below)
  • Difficulty breathing or coughing
  • Unexplained bruising or nosebleeds
  • Swollen abdomen

If you suspect your dog has ingested rat bait, get them to the vet immediately. Prompt treatment can save their life. If you know which type of rat bait ingested this is crucial information to ensure we can administer the correct treatment.

To prevent poisoning, always store rat bait out of reach of pets and be cautious when placing it in areas your dogs can access. Consider using traps or pet friendly bait stations.
